SPC Flooring Buyer's Guide: 7 Quality Checks Before You Order

Seven checks to run before you order SPC flooring.

SPC Flooring Buyer's Guide: 7 Quality Checks Before You Order

Cheap SPC flooring fails early — it scratches, gaps and off-gasses within a year. Seven checks stop that happening.

The 7 Quality Checks

1. Total Thickness

SPC planks come in 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and 8mm. Thicker boards hide subfloor unevenness and resist flex. For US homes, 5mm or 6mm suits most rooms. Reserve 8mm for busy hallways and commercial jobs.

2. Wear Layer

The clear film on top decides how long the design survives. 0.3mm scratches quickly. 0.5mm handles family traffic and pets. 0.7mm is the commercial grade. Always confirm the figure in writing before you pay.

3. Click System

Our planks use 5G Click, licensed from Unilin. The joint snaps firmly and holds tight seams. Ask which lock the supplier uses and whether it is licensed. A vague answer here predicts gaps later.

4. Fire Rating

US building codes reference ASTM E84. Class A is the top band: flame spread index 0–25 and smoke development under 450. Request the test report. A listing without one is a warning, not a formality.

5. Emissions

E0 and E1 are the recognised formaldehyde limits. E0 is the stricter of the two. SPC cores contain little formaldehyde, but adhesives and print films can add some. Look for E0 or E1 results from an independent lab.

6. Certifications

Two marks matter. FSC confirms responsible forest sourcing for the print layers. CE marking to EN 14041 confirms the product meets European requirements for resilient flooring. Both should be verifiable by certificate number.

7. Surface and Warranty

Check the pattern range: wood grain, stone and marble designs should vary across boards, not repeat every three planks. Plank sizes like 1220×182mm or 1215×195mm suit most US rooms. Read the 1 year warranty terms before ordering.

Red Flags That Signal Low-Quality SPC

Too-Thin Wear Layer

If the supplier quotes 0.3mm for a living room or kitchen, walk away. That grade suits short-term or low-traffic use only. Homes need 0.5mm or more.

No Fire Rating Data

A product page that never mentions ASTM E84 usually has no test report. Without a Class A result, inspectors may reject the floor in commercial or multi-family projects.

Vague Certifications

Phrases like "eco certified" with no certificate number, issuer or standard mean nothing. Ask for the FSC and CE documents by number, then check them.

Missing Click System Details

If the lock type is unnamed, it is probably a generic profile with loose tolerances. Joints loosen, seams open and water finds its way down.

How US Homeowners Can Verify Before Ordering

Request Samples

Ask for two or three planks, not a small chip. Lay them out to see the pattern repeat and colour consistency.

Check the Documentation

Ask for the ASTM E84 report, the E0 or E1 emission results, and the FSC and CE certificates. Reputable suppliers send these within a day.

Test the Click Connection

Join two sample planks by hand. A good 5G Click joint snaps cleanly and holds when you lift one board. A joint that slides or clicks softly is a weak lock.

Inspect the Wear Layer

Scratch the sample edge with a coin. On a 0.5mm or 0.7mm wear layer, no clear film should peel or cloud. Any lifting film means the protection is thin or poorly bonded.

Which wear layer do US homes need?

0.5mm for family traffic and pets. 0.7mm for rentals, shops and busy hallways. Avoid 0.3mm in any room used every day.

Why does ASTM E84 Class A matter in the United States?

It is the top band for flame spread and smoke development, and many codes reference it for multi-family and commercial spaces. Keep the report with your project files.

How do I confirm a supplier's claims are real?

Request full-plank samples, the ASTM E84 report, E0 or E1 emission results, and FSC and CE certificate numbers. Test the click joint by hand before you order.
